President David Granger says government “have taken measures to ensure that the autonomy and integrity of the Judiciary in Guyana is not just a matter of prescription but is also a matter of fact.”

The Head of State was speaking at ceremony where Acting Chief Justice, Ms. Yonette Cummings-Edwards was sworn as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Justice Cummings-Edwards took the Oath as a member of the Judicial Service Commission on Wednesday at the Ministry of the Presidency.

President Granger believes her appointment to such a position is one that should not be taken lightly if government is to win back the trust of the Guyanese people.

“We have taken a step forward and I want to assure you Honourable Chancellor that we will continue to work towards preserving the dignity and integrity of the Judicial Service Commission” he said.

The President further added “that in so doing, we (government) have so far, been able to win the confidence of the public and we will continue to ensure that not only the complement of the JSC is kept in accordance with the law but also the confidence and the competence of the members of that Commission are always above reproach.”

The President has expressed confidence in Justice Cummings-Edwards’ ability to properly function on the judicial Service Commission.

Justice Cummings-Edward is no stranger to the legal fraternity after beginning her law career back in 1988.  She was singled out as the fittest person for job by the ruling APNU+AFC administration and appointed to the position after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition.
