In light of the deadly Camp Street Prison riot, Government is exploring medium and long term solutions to address the age old challenges confronting Guyana’s Prison System. This was revealed during a visit yesterday (March 6, 2016) by President David Granger and State Minister, Joseph Harmon to the Mazaruni Penal Settlement in the Cuyuni- Mazaruni Region.
According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), the visit is part of the government’s assessment of the Prison Service to ascertain suitable ways to improve the way it functions. President Granger, prior to the tour assured the staff at the facility that the issues would be resolved within the limit of the country’s resources and his government’s best ability.
Referencing the horrific event which took place last week, the Head-of-State noted that the problems in the Penal System are “endemic” highlighting the need for a long term strategy to ensure that the Prison Service fulfills its mandate efficiently.
He believes that the riot could have been avoided if the problems were addressed over time.
Prison officers also had the opportunity to share their concerns with the President and State Minister.
