Fourteen Unions have already formed a Steering Committee “committed to healing the wounds of the Trade Union Movement” in the lead up to this year’s May Day Parade.

Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) General Secretary, Coretta McDonald who sits on the executive of the Committee told News Room “it is not about us individuals but collectively the workers of Guyana.”

Ms. McDonald disclosed that there is a general consensus among workers for the Unions to celebrate the day as one, “teachers are saying, other workers are saying we would want to have one May Day Rally and March.”

She said “we (Steering Committee) are now at the stage where we are about to engage the two organizations, Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) and Guyana Trade Union Congress (GTUC)…they happen to be the two organizations who are the leading umbrella bodies for the workers of this country.”

On Thursday, members of the Steering Committee will meet with the heads of FITUG and GTUC.

Over the years workers would usually begin the May Day march together and then eventually split up.
