Throughout his stellar international career Shivnarine Chanderpaul played the supporting role in several great performances by the West Indies.

Few will forget his 104 back in 2003 when he steered the West Indies to a world record 418 runs in the memorable second innings to defeat Australia.

On Sunday, the recently retired West Indies icon, played a similar role but this time it was not for the West Indies. It was for his son, rising regional batsman Tagenarine and a Tiger XI team as they defeated Independence Sports Club by 18 runs in a T20 match staged in his honour.

The senior Chanderpaul made 56 runs in a partnership of 190 runs dominated by his son, who made an unbeaten 124.

It started out badly for Tiger XI losing a wicket in the very first over with only five runs on the board. It may have been a disastrous start but it set the stage for the Chanderpaul show. The two put on 190 runs for the second wicket with the elder statesman scoring his half century which included two sixes and four fours.

Shivnarine also taught his son well. The youngster clubbed 10 sixes and 11 fours as he raced to his unbeaten ton. By the time they were done Tiger XI had raced to 204-2. Mahendra Dhanpaul 1-43 and Sheik Bacchus 1-30 were successful bowlers for ISC.

In their turn at bat ISC were restricted to 186-5 as captain Sarfraz Esau scored an entertaining 62.  Dhanpaul followed up his wicket with a well-made 34. Opener Vivian Beckles contributed 31 to the unsuccessful chase.

Tagenarine demonstrated his all-round skill claiming 2-39. Vishal Arjune took 2 for 34.
