The Joint Services were this afternoon forced to scramble back into operations and activate their Standard Operating Procedures, after prisoners of the Camp Street Jail ignited a paper which caught onto other items inside a cell they are being housed.

According to information reaching News Room, the fire was lit in the ‘B’ Block section of the prison, just south of the Capital ‘A’ Section where the deadly fire of two weeks ago claimed the lives of 17 prisoners.

Divisional Commander Clifton Hicken who spoke with News Room said that the Brickdam Police Operations Room received a report about the fire just after 15:00hrs.

He said prison officers, on duty at the time quickly managed to put out the fire before things got out of control and before the Guyana Fire Service and the police arrived at the scene.

Unconfirmed reports stated that the Joint Services would be looking to put back into operation some of the resources that were in place during the unfortunate situation of two weeks ago.
