The President’s Youth Award – Republic of Guyana (PYARG) Programme was yesterday (March 23) commended for engaging youths in a Tree Planting exercise, held on the Merriman’s Mall, Georgetown.

The Head of State said the exercise is an important step toward the green future that Guyana is pursuing.

Speaking briefly after the event, the President underscored that the activity was “an important step” that every citizen must embrace as “Guyana aims to become a leader in sustainable development and embarks on green initiatives.”

He noted further that “it is a policy for the greening of the economy. I hope that what we saw here today is replicated in other parts of the country… We want a completely green environment so that our country can be healthier. We don’t want people to concentrate just here, but planting mangroves and so on the seashore. This is just one of the spokes in the wheel.”

This is one of the efforts which will be promoted and encouraged by his administration, in addition to the pursuit of renewable energy generation, the Head of State assured.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Agriculture Minister, Noel Holder, who expressed pleasure with initiative undertaken by the youths.

“Protecting and maintaining the environment is important for sustainable agriculture and the future for where our children can live. Aside from the known benefits of a clean and green environment, it has the potential to transform food security, reduce poverty and create jobs,” the Minister posited.
