Night court to be established in the next few weeks-Trotman

Guyana’s judicial system could within the next few weeks see night court sessions being introduced to ease the burden on the prison system.

This was disclosed today by Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman at the this week’s post Cabinet media briefing who said these sessions could run for four hours starting at 16:00 hours daily.

Minister Trotman also informed the media that based on this new feature the Ministry of Finance had to be approached  for a special budgetary arrangement which should be brought to the National Assembly, when it next sits in May.

The purpose of the night court, Trotman says is not to send more people to prison but  to process those being detained.

In recent weeks a high level Government team met with their counterparts in the Judiciary to discuss ways the courts could relieve the prison system with regard to overcrowding.

This follows on the heels of the unrest at the Camp Street Prison that resulted in the death of 17 inmates.
