Golden Jaguars in Puerto Rico for second CFU Caribbean Cup match

Guyana’s National Football Team – The Golden Jaguars – arrived in Puerto Rico today (March 26) for their second Group 5 match in this year’s Scotiabank Caribbean Cup on Tuesday March 29 at the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium, Bayamon.

This will be the second meeting between Guyana and the United States territory, with the first being in 1993 Caribbean Cup which was then named the ‘Shell Cup’.

Guyana went down 2 – 0 at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground against Puerto Rico who secured the win with goals from Brian Conlon and Danny Mueller.

Puerto Rico will play their first match in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) showpiece today (March 26) against Anguilla who lost 7 – 0 to Guyana in their opening match. It’s clear that the game between Guyana and Puerto Rico will be to decide who tops Group 5.

Following their lopsided win against the Anguillans at the Guyana National Stadium last Tuesday (March 22), Golden Jaguars Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz was furious over the fact that his team, due to the lack of proper training facility, was under-prepared.

“We have some connections through Chris Nurse who plays in Puerto Rico, so we will be able to train on Saturday, Sunday and Monday” Shabazz told reporters.

The usually outspoken Head Coach said that his team had “four sessions in preparation for this game and none of the sessions really was on a full size field, so it’s good that we will be going to Puerto Rico earlier so that we get the sessions that are required”.
