The David Granger-led Administration is streamlining the Policing system to ensure that each Divisional Commander provides direct information to the Chairpersons in the respective regions.

This, the Head of State said would remove several anomalies in the operation of the Guyana Police Force.

He was responding to a question posed by a journalist on the television programme, “Public Interest.”

“We saw a grouping of the police where the entire hinterland literally region one, seven, eight and nine was under one Divisional Commander who was actually working at Eve Leary and living in Georgetown…yes it’s bizarre,” the President highlighted. He said while the public may be unaware of the changes being made, the system is being restructured to allow greater efficiency.

Given the vastness of the regions, President Granger said Government has proposed to the Police Force that a high ranking officer be stationed in each region, so that the Chairpersons or Mayors consult with one person rather than waiting for someone to travel from Georgetown.

While noting that the cards are still on the table regarding this restructuring process, several changes have already been implemented, pointing to the fact that the Rupununi now has mounted police. This, the President said is to ensure high Police presence in all areas, which according to him has resulted in faster apprehension of criminals and response to emergencies.

President Granger believes Guyana is becoming a safer place and while some persons continue to criticize the Force, some are appreciative of the efforts being made. He also expressed his confidence in Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan, who is working in tandem with the Commissioner of Police.
