    By Stacy Carmichael-James

Following news of his resignation as Chairman of the Alliance For Change (AFC) last evening (April 11), Nigel Hughes took to Social Media to give some insight.

Hughes in a Face Book post said “My continuing to act as Chairman of the party had become difficult and untenable.”

He confirmed also that his resignation was tendered yesterday, as widely reported in the media.

A statement issued by AFC said the announcement of Hughes’ resignation was made at a Statutory Management Meeting held yesterday.

That press release indicated that “Party Leader Khemraj Ramjattan, who was present at the meeting, subsequently spoke with Mr. Hughes and a meeting is arranged for Tuesday, April 12.” It is however unclear  what will be the focus of today’s meeting.

Hughes’ resignation also comes after the AFC had issued a statement on April 10 calling for State Minister, Joe Harmon to be stripped of some of his responsibilities, following several decisions, including the appointment of businessman Brian Tiwarie as an Adviser; did not sit well with many.

In yesterday’s press release “the party confirms unequivocally that the statement issued on April 10th following its leadership retreat was one which was unanimously approved by the attendees of the leadership retreat.”

However, Party Leader, Khemraj Ramjattan was not present at that retreat.
