The University recently returned with five medals from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Invitational Track and Field Competition in Mona Campus, Jamaica, one of which was gold in a 1600m Medley relay.

The team of Owen Adonis, Floyd Phillips, Kadeem Peters and Cleveland Forde ran the 1600m Medley race that featured a 400m, 200m, 200m and 800m in that order in 3:37.50 for first place.

The other members of the University of Guyana’s Track and Field team included Kezia Bess, Vanessa Shelto, Travis Poole, Salim Yussuf, Ameer Yussuf and Kleon Spelling. Mark Scott was appointed Coach of the team for the UWI Invitational.

The team returned to Guyana and competed last Friday at a Golden Jubilee Relay Festival at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora where the team reportedly put in some performances that were creditable, winning several events.

The University will be competing at the Boyce and Jefford Relay Festival this coming Sunday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary where they will hope to continue the rise among some of the best athletes and clubs in Guyana.

    The Events for the Relay Festival include (male and females): 4×100, 4x200m 4×400, Sprint Medley Females (100m, 100m, 200m, 400m), Sprint Medley Males (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m)

    Distance Medley Females (400m, 600m, 600m, 800m), Distance Medley Males (400m, 600m, 600m, 1200m).

In addition, each relay race carries a total prize of $40,000 with $20,000 for the winner; $12,000 for second and $8,000 for third place. Teams are expected from Linden, Berbice, East Coast and Georgetown-based clubs.
