Boasting the youngest team in the competition, Guyana went down 1-7 to Chile on the opening day of the 2016 Junior Pan American Hockey Championship in Canada on Friday afternoon.

Playing in Pool B, the Guyanese found themselves up against it very early, as they conceded two first half goals. Franco Becerra gave Chile the lead with a goal in the 20th minute, and then 13 minutes later, Juan Amoroso doubled the advantage.

While the Guyanese did manage to score a solitary goal in the second half, the Chileans went on a rampage, slotting home five more goals.

Amoroso completed his double in the 44th minute; two minutes later, Nils Strabucchi made it 4-0. However, Aroydy Brandford breached the defence in the 58th minute to hand Guyana a reprieve, albeit the only one of the match.

Nicolas Renz then blasted in a double in the space of three minutes (60th and 63rd), while four minutes later, Jose Hurtado tucked in the final goal of the match.

In other results of the day, Argentina trounced Trinidad and Tobago 5-0, USA whipped Puerto Rico 8-0 and Mexico edged Canada 3-2.
