Often times, hurdling in forgotten in the grand scheme of Guyana’s athletics but overseas based Guyanese Jenea McCammon is shining some light on the event.

For most of us it went unnoticed because of the attention usually paid to the more customary events, but nevertheless, McCammon is now the holder of both Guyana’s 100 and 400 metres hurdles records; a feat she accomplished at the NTC/PURE Athletics Elite Meet on May 14 in Clermont, USA.

McCammon clocked 13.53s to set the new 100 metres hurdles record while clocking 58.46s to set the new 400 metres hurdle record.

The hurdler told News Room Sports that “beeing able to claim two national records in one meet feels great! At the beginning of the season, one of my overall goals was to become the record holder in all three hurdle events. I finished indoor just .03 seconds off the 60mh record which made me hungrier and more determined for outdoor,”

However, while McCammon is happy with the records, her main objective is to qualify for the Rio Olympics in August.

“Both my coach and I know the best is yet to come. My training has been structured whereby my fastest times will be at the end of the outdoor season. For the upcoming meets, the goal is to lower my times and stay on schedule for progressing week to week. Hitting the standards for Rio is the number one objective! The privilege to run for Guyana is also a great motivator for me to continue to improve,” McCammon expressed.

McCammon will need to clock 13.00s or lower in the 100 metres hurdles to qualify and 56.20s or lower in the 400 metres hurdles.
