Fraser- Green, Cornelius, Newton and Niles are champions

Claire Fraser-Green, Christopher Cornelius, Raymond Newton and Junior Niles emerged champions of their respective categories earlier today when the Guyana Cycling Federation’s National Cycling Championship opened on the East Coast of Demerara.

The first day of the three-day championship was contested on the Mahaicony circuit where the national riders sought to out do each other for national honours and one year bragging rights.

Fraser-Green, the England-based rider who travels every year to compete solely in the National Championship, copped the Time Trial and Road Race titles for the fourth year in succession.

The Ladies Time Trial lasted one lap (5.3  miles), while the Road Race was five laps (26.5 miles).

Christopher Cornelius of Team Gillette Evolution copped the Junior Road Race title, winning ahead of Deeraj Garbarran of Team Alanis and Briton John of WS United.

That race was for eight laps, equivalent to 42.4 miles.

Zamal Khan of Flying Stars copped the Juveniles Road Race title, crossing the line first in the five-lap (26.5 miles) race.

Raymond Newton (Roraima), Andy Spencer (Team Gillette Evolution) and Shameer Baksh (Carlton Wheelers) were 1-2-3 in the Masters Over-45 race, which was contested for eight laps.

The Masters Under-45 was won by Junior Niles of Team Coco’s followed by Stephen Fernandes of Team Gillette Evolution and Paul Choo Wee Nam of Team Alanis in that order. That category was also contested for eight laps.

The championship will continue next weekend with the Time Trial for the Juveniles, Masters, Junior and Elite riders on Saturday in Mahaicony, while the Road Race for the Elite cyclists will be held on Sunday around the outer circuit of the National Park.
