The Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) expansion project is slated to be completed by the end of 2017 providing that all goes well.

According to the Public Infrastructure Ministry’s Project Manager Carmichael Thorne, some US$37M has been used on the airport expansion project which is being done for Airport to accommodate larger planes.

The Project Manager said the relocation of present structures and buildings will have to be done to facilitate the project, which he suspects can be a challenge in the future.

The new airport will have a runway end safety area (RESA) feature which does not currently exist according to the Ministry’s Special Technical Advisor Walter Willis.

The project which is being done by the Guyana and Chinese governments and was expected to be completed since September last year having started since 2013.

China Harbour Engineering Company Limited was awarded the contract to execute the now US 150-million-dollar project.

When completed, the runway will be able to accommodate Boeing 747-400 aircraft, expansion and modernization of the CJIA which includes the construction of a new terminal building, taxiways, and the extension of the runway by a further 35 hundred feet.
