Newly appointed Heads of Mission were today urged by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge to keep abreast with developments in the country, as this is critical to their roles.

The Heads of Mission are undergoing a week of orientation at the Foreign Service Institute with a specific focus on border issues, trade and investment and economic diplomacy, among other areas.

CARICOM and the integration movement, the environment and the importance of technology are just a few of the other focal areas that the newly appointed Heads of Mission will be undergoing training in during the one-week orientation.

Minister Greenidge said a pinnacle of achievement for his ministry would be the reestablishment of one of the most effective Foreign Services in the Western Hemisphere.

The expectation is that through an institutional mechanism, which involves the installation of an advisory team to the minister that deals with policy formulation, the ministry would be able to capitalize on past experiences.

This, Greenidge said would steer the Foreign Affairs ministry in the right direction.

The minister highlighted the importance of Heads of Mission being knowledgeable of the emergence of new global challenges such as the BREXIT, noting too that Guyana’s foreign service must be able to adapt.

Being aware of what is taking place locally is also crucial to the role of the Heads of Mission as the minister outlined.

Additionally, The promotion of Guyana’s tourism potential and addressing issues related to anti-money laundering procedures and other consular matters are some other expectations of the Heads of Mission.

Former ambassadors will be facilitating this orientation exercise which concludes on Friday.
