The ninth of the New Generation Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations Subjects (CAPE), Green Engineering was today officially launched at the Theatre Guild.

Senior Assistant Registrar, Syllabus and Curriculum Division of the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) Howard Campbell during the launch said the Council recognizes the changing needs of learners, as well as the emerging demands of the world.

In this regard, one of the key priorities of CXC, he noted, is to ensure that products respond to these changing needs and reflect changes in global and economic drivers.

Education Minister, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine delivering the feature address at the event said some of the objectives of the subject have spatial application to the Caribbean, therefore it is appropriate that it is being introduced.

He pointed to global warming phenomenon and how the introduction of this subject could produce a cadre of individuals equipped to address climate change issues.

The syllabus is organized in two units. A unit comprises three modules each requiring fifty hours.

According to CXC the study of CAPE Green Engineering will enable students to acquire the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to sustain the natural environment. It will also allow students to apply Scientific, Technological, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) principles to improve their environment at the local, regional and global levels.

The syllabus aims to among others enhance students’ awareness of the broad environmental, social and economic impact of engineering and promote an awareness of the global challenges related to the environment and the impact of decisions on present and future generations.
