Gov’t makes appointments based on competency and experience- Granger clarifies

President David Granger responding to concerns raised by the Opposition regarding the appointments of Military personnel to fill certain positions said persons are appointed once they qualify noting that when he took office in 2015 there were some ten officers who were appointed by the previous administration.

The Head of State, who was speaking on his weekly programme “The Public Interest” said “well you can ask President Jagdeo and President Ramotar why they appointed Major General Singh to his present position, why they appointed Colonel Chabilall Ramsarup to CDC, Colonel Brassington Reynolds as a judge, why they appointed Colonel Persaud as accountant general and you could go through a whole list of people.”

The President pointed to the fact that “these are human beings, they have the skills, they are not a separate breed of citizens,” noting that once these individuals have the talent and qualifications then they should not be deprived of their rights.

Granger made it clear that he does not discriminate, citing that “obviously Mr. Jagdeo, Mr. Ramotar did not discriminate against them because I inherited a number of former Military officers from the PPP administration, I don’t see that anything could be wrong with asking a Colonel here a Brigadier there to do a Commission of Inquiry, the question is are they competent to do it.”

He maintains that persons are appointed based on competency and experience.

Granger said if persons in the PPP want to point fingers then they should explain why a former military officer that was dismissed for misconduct was appointed by that administration in a ministerial position.
