Improper access roads to farmlands and infrequent excavation of drainage canals were among the main concerns of farmers in Region Six who met with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA).

Following several complaints to the Office of the Prime Minister, Region 6 representative, Mr. Gobin Harbhajan the CEO, Mr. Fredrick Flatts met with farmers on Thursday to discuss issues surrounding drainage and irrigation in the region.

The CEO discussed several proposed agricultural projects including excavation of the drainage canals from #52 to Canje Creek.

According to information gathered, the blocking of the canal resulted in approximately 3,000 acres of rice land not being cultivated this year.

Other issues included the need for the region to deploy at least two graders to maintain the dams in the cultivated areas with the supervision of the Water Users Association and the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs). The farmers noted that the improper access roads to farmlands are proving to be a hazard for them when driving in with the heavy duty vehicles.

The CEO on the other hand appealed to the farmers to desist from going into the “back dam” with their heavy duty vehicles unless it is necessary, in an effort to keep the roads in good condition.

The meeting was hosted at the Conference Hall at Nand Persaud & Company Limited.
