The Region three Democratic Council (RDC) on Friday sought to honour its elderly population as part of its Emancipation activities planned for the month of August.   Regional Executive Officer Jairam Jaikarran told the News Room that the administration is seeking to fulfil its role of not only being a service provider but also a body which respects the tradition, cultures and values of each race, religion and groups.

The RDC held a small but significant ceremony to honour some of the older persons for their contribution to their community. As a token of appreciation, the male and female citizens received hampers from the council; a feature which the council hopes to continue until its life expires.

The council hosted several events last week in observation of Emancipation. There was a culture day where approximately 150 employees of the region decked out in their best African attire and head wrap.

The Region 3 Administration has also formally launched an Amerindian Committee to spearhead activities within the Region during Indigenous Affairs month which will be observed from September 1, 2016. One feature that has already been decided on, is a plan to transfer the RDC’s compound into an Amerindian Village. The village will depict various traditions and features of our Nation’s First People.

Indigenous Affairs Month 2016 will be focusing on Amerindians’ contributions to the green economy, reflected in the theme “Our culture, Earth’s Future-save the environment, live the indigenous way.”
