Workers and Union reps picket MOTP over closure of Wales estate

Workers attached to the Wales Estate along with their children and representatives of the Guyana Agriculture and General Workers Union (GAWU) on Tuesday picketed the Ministry of the Presidency.

According to the group, the exercise was done to get the attention of President David Granger to rethink his government’s decision to close the Estate.

GAWU President Komal Chand said the Union is of the opinion that the decision is a step in the wrong direction and could result in hardship for the over 17 hundred workers at the Estate.

Chand said March 20 was the last time that the Guyana Sugar Corporation met with the Union on the matter, as they move closer to the closure of the Estate.

To date, numerous workers have  been sent home after being considered redundant. Additionally, 60 others were relieved of their duties since they were viewed as not permanently employed, said Chand.

Since the closure of the Wales Sugar Estate was announced the workers have taken the picketing line venting their concerns about the move.

GAWU along with the workers have even started an online petition urging the support of the public on the matter.
