$9M proposed for the rehabilitation of N/A Amerindian hostel

During its budget presentation, the Regional Democratic Council in Region Six proposed some nine million dollars to be spent on extension works, rehabilitation and installation of toilet facilities at the New Amsterdam Amerindian Hostel.

Only recently, councillors of the RDC had raised concerns about the living conditions under which  persons coming out of the Berbice River are faced with when staying at the facility.

According to the regional Chairman David Armogan, once his proposed budget is approved, works on the hostel would commence early next year.

“As you know for many years now students have been coming out of the Berbice River and been staying at that hostel so we need to do some work to make them more comfortable,” he stated

Armogan said although the upper flat of the hostel is used for the children and the downstairs for the adults, soon alternative arrangements will be made for the adults, following complaints of wrong doings at the facility.

He said “we have also seen an increase in the amount of students coming out of the Baracara area so we will also allow them at the hostel and also provide suitable accommodation”

This is in keeping with Government’s policy to ensure each student is comfortable and has access to quality education.

Additionally, the RDC is hoping that the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs, the Ministry of the Presidency and other agencies will contribute towards this project so that more works can be done on the Amerindian Hostel in Stanleytown ,New Amsterdam.
