PPP holds public forum to address alleged corruption by Gov’t

The Opposition people’s Progressive Party on Wednesday held a public forum to address several matters which the party claims have infested the Guyanese society, these include militarization of the state, discrimination, intimidation, witch-hunting and other accusations against the present administration.

Several senior members of the opposition party were present at the public forum and pointed out that the outlined issues cut across ethnic lines and borders into the political.

Government policies were deemed inadequate and the general lack of consultation and public dialogue were deemed as steps in the wrong direction for a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society.

Social commentator, Ramon Gaskin speaking at the event said the militarization of Guyana did not start when President David Granger took office, but what he said is visible today is a proliferation.

And while he said serving in the military does not preclude a person from  serving in the public service, he said when other qualified persons are denied these positions, a problem exists.

PPP executive member, Dr. Roger Luncheon also questioned how the present administration could continue along the same destructive path even in the face of public criticisms.

Former President and PPP executive Donald Ramotar during his presentation also condemned what the party describes as racial and political victimization of the PPP’s supporters.  He said this governance style was birthed years ago.

In response to racism claims against the PPP, Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo said the party is prepared to do an analysis on the state of Afro-Guyanese under the various administrations. It is his view that Afro-Guyanese were better off under the PPP’s governance.

Presentations were also made by Anil Nandlall, Clement Rohee, while the event was chaired by Irfaan Ali.
