Over 200 children receive back to school supplies

Assisting the less fortunate, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has partnered with other bodies to distribute over 200 back-to-school kits to students in the Berbice area.

FACT; NGO in Corriverton partnered with the U.S. Embassy-Georgetown Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP) with support from Spirit of America to distribute a number of school kits to school age children on the Corentyne.
The kits contained a new school bag, notebooks, children’s reading books, pens, pencils and toothbrushes.

Representatives from the Guyana Medical Relief, based in Los Angeles, were also in attendance and provided TOMS-brand shoes for all the students.

Ben Jimenez, the HAP Logistics Coordinator explained to the children, the importance of being educated. He encouraged them to stay in school.

Additionally, the mayor of Corriverton, Ganesh Gangadin during his remarks noted: “Education is the key to poverty reduction  in order for you to be guaranteed a bright and successful future heavy emphasis must be placed on education and paving a  career path.”

The Corriverton Mayor also encouraged the recipients to examine careers associated with the emerging sectors like oil and gas and Information technology.
He said, “these sectors will be the drivers of economic growth and will provide higher paying jobs than the traditional sectors.”

The annual event organised by FACT is in its 10th year. It was started through fundraising activities and donations from founder and leader, Sunita Jaundoo- Frank who has migrated over twelve years now.
Support over the years was garnered from Republic Bank, GBTI Corriverton and Food for the Poor.
Recipients expressed appreciations towards the various group who collaborated to ensure the children were provided with if not all, most of what are needed to get them prepared for the new academic year.
