St Rose’s High Student tops this year’s CSEC
Copping top place at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination is Fatima Karim of St Rose’s High School with 19 grade ones and one grade two.
Coming in second is Kayshav Tewari of Queen’s College with 19 grade ones followed by Aadilah Ali also of Queen’s College with 18 grade ones, 3 grade twos and 1 grade three. Achieving 18 grade ones is Ramkumarie Ramdass of SarawatiVidya Nakitan.
During a Press conference today, it was disclosed that Guyana saw a marginal increase in the overall pass rate at CSEC with 63.39% compared to 62.72% in 2015.
While a full analysis of individual candidate’s performances is not yet available, it was disclosed that 48 candidates achieved grade ones in 11 or more subjects and 157 candidates achieved grade ones in more than 8 subjects.
There was an improvement in English Language where a pass rate of 59.3% was achieved compared to 49.36% in 2015.
On the other hand, the performance in Mathematics declined from 45.07% in 2015 to 38.37% in 2016.
It was noted that the same trend in Maths and English was seen across the region. On Friday last during the official release of the results in Anguilla, Glenroy Cumberbatch from Barbados who is a Registrar at CXC disclosed that overall performance in Mathematics saw a 13% decrease. Candidates recorded a 44% pass rate in Maths this year as opposed to 57% in 2015.
On the other hand, English Language saw an improvement from 60% in 2015 to 67 in 2016 across the region.
The region had an overall pass rate with grades one to three of 64%.
Candidates wrote 35 subjects at this year’s CSEC. Excellent performances were recorded in fifteen subjects where grades one to three passes exceeded 75%. The fifteen subjects are: Agriculture Science (DA), Agriculture Science (SA), Biology, Food and Nutrition, French, Home Economics Management, Information Technology, Principles of Business, Religious Education, Theatre Arts, EDPM, Physical Education, Music, Building Technology (Const) and Building Technology (Woods).
