The Super Upcoming Runners (SUR) Athletics Club is hoping to steal a bit of the spotlight at the 2016 edition of the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic, scheduled for this weekend at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden.

While not in the top tier clubs of the country, the budding athletics club is hoping to make a statement when action in the seventh edition of the Classic begins on Saturday.

Coach of the club, Carla Rodney sat down with News Room Sport and spoke a bit on their preparation for the two-day athletics event.

“Well, preparations are going good so far; we have athletes from Berbice as part of our team, I expect them to do well, we may not get the million, but I expect them to do well at these game,” Rodney noted.

Rodney also highlighted the challenges for their Berbice affiliate. “Well, we hope they do well, they train everyday at several different grounds depending on the work they have to do but they really need a facility up there and somehow I think the government needs to get a facility there that is the only way they will get better athletes,” Rodney highlighted.

Nevertheless, Rodney wants her athletes to remain focus as the club aims for success. “I just want everybody to put their best foot forward, I don’t want them to let a name in a race put them off their guard- they need to remain focus and perform the way they need to perform,” Rodney stated.

Rodney believes that going up against big clubs such as Police and GDF will only help to improve her athletes.

“We see it as an opportunity to better ourselves even though we have Police to contend with, GDF to contend with…we also know that MFL and Linden will be there but we will make that extra effort to make sure we are in that top bracket this year,” Rodney noted.

With the top prize being one million dollars, some of the top clubs in Guyana will be vying for what is the largest purse in the event’s history.
