    Ms. Mikiko Tanaka was appointed new United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative to Guyana. Tanaka is replacing Ms. Khadija Musa, who served Guyana over the last four years.

     

    Ms. Tanaka who is a native of Japan presented her credentials to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge on August 24, 2016, at Takuba Lodge, officially starting her mandate in the country.

     

    According to a statement from the UN, prior to her appointment as the highest ranking UN Official in Guyana, Ms. Tanaka served as UNDP’s Country Director in Yemen (2013-2016), UNDP Country Director in Timor-Leste (2010-2013), Deputy Country Director in Pakistan from 2007-2010 and Deputy Resident Representative in Benin from 2002-2007. The new UN Resident Coordinator joined UNDP in 1995 and has also served in China, Lao PDR and New York.

     

    Ms. Tanaka holds a Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Communication from International Christian University, Japan, a Master of Rural Development Management from Khon Kaen University, Thailand and a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management from the University of London, England.

     

    A native of Japan, Ms. Tanaka speaks French and English.
