Several roads in Region six including the highly controversial East Bank Berbice Road will soon be rehabilitated.

Regional Chairman David Armogan said through the Ministry of Public Infrastructure works on a few roads in New Amsterdam have commenced.

These fall under the Urban Development Programme. Some of the roads slated to be rehabilitated include the Vryman’s Erven Backdam Road, Republic Road, Berbice High School Road, National Insurance Scheme Road, which leads to the St Theresa’s Primary School, as well as Library and Chapel Streets.

According to the Chairman, “all roads have been awarded it is just for the contractors to mobilize and get them started, some have already started”.

The Chairman noted that contractors are looking forward to good weather to facilitate the completion of the roads before year end.

Armogan further disclosed that other rural roads such as the Black Bush and Liverpool Roads will be rehabilitated.

It was also highlighted that the controversial East Bank Berbice Road has already been tendered but according to him, “cabinet is taking long to decide which contract to give, two contractors have been shortlisted”.

He pointed out that the road will cost some US $8 Million and is likely to start within the next two weeks.

Armogan said the International Development Bank has already completed its part.
