Residents “fed up” of stench at Free Yard, Port Mourant

Residents of Free Yard, Port Mourant are expressing anger over an “overbearing stench” emanating from the Port Mourant Market.

According to Pamela Deonarine, a teacher of the Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary School, “fish guts, rotten fruits and vegetables” along with other garbage are left scattered following Market day on Saturdays.

She stressed that the stench has become overbearing and is a health hazard, pointing to the fact that many school children, residents  and pensioners who frequent the National Insurance Scheme located opposite the market are affected daily.

It was also highlighted that recommendations were made at a recently held NDC meeting, but thus far nothing has been done.

News Room was told that the workers responsible for cleaning the surroundings are on strike, claiming the lack of the required tools to get the job done.

Efforts to contact the NDC Chairman, Imran Ali have proven futile.
