The works of 56 distinguished Guyanese women were celebrated through an exhibition hosted by the Women and Gender Equality Commission on Friday at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre.

The categories of women being honoured are from the are pre-independence era, those involved in politics, culture and art, academics, sport, business, differently abled and community leaders (referred to as grass root heroes).

According to Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, “Women in Guyana have always been important to the politics of change.” At the time Minister Roopnaraine was referring to the entrance of women into the electoral races, unions, local authorities, city councils and the government.

“These women have not had the benefit of public visibility but have worked over the many decades tirelessly and frequently without rightful knowledge to maintain homes, parties, and importantly, ideas and aspirations,” he said.

The minister also lauded the Women and Gender Equality Commission for the work they have done to bridge the old divides of race and politics.

The exhibition is hosted annually and is usually supported by and held at the National Assembly.

In her remarks to the gathering, the Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry highlighted that “gender equality is at the heart of human rights, yet millions of women around the world continue to experience discrimination”. The Minister added that this results in fewer and poorer life choices for women rendering them vulnerable to trafficking, and denies women sexual and reproductive health rights.

“When women are empowered, they can contribute to the health and productivity of whole families and communities and improve prospects of the next generation,” Minister Henry declared.

She also recognised that we must all work together to ensure that women are given their rightful places as the women that are being honoured came from different walks of life but they all showed courage, determination and selfless service.

Indranie Chanderpal, Chairperson of the Women and Gender Equality Commission in her remarks spoke about the history of the Commission, its achievements and future plans.
