Linden Special Needs Centre tops ‘Signing Bee’ competition

Students from two special need schools on Tuesday participated in the Ministry of Education’s “Signing Bee” competition with Ulancy Emmanuel of the Linden Special Needs Centre emerging as the winner.

Second place went to Kacia Miller while the third place winner was Malini Somawaru both from the David Rose special needs schools.

The Signing Bee was organised for students between the ages of 10 and 12 who are either deaf or hearing impaired.

In an invited comment, National Centre for Education Resource Development (NCERD) Special Education Officer, Savvie Hopkinson-Hamilton says initially four schools were meant to participate but on the day of the competition, only two showed up.

Each school was also expected to send two participants, however, Linden was only able to send one contestant.

The Special Education Needs Unit of the NCERD hosted the event as part of Education Month 2016 activities. Education Month is being observed under the banner “Each Child Matters: Stakeholders Unite for the Enhancement of Education”.
