The Commonwealth Judges’ and Magistrates’ Association, a London-based organisation, in collaboration with the Supreme Court of Guyana will host a conference at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown which will begin on Monday September 19, 2016.

The conference which is being held under the theme “The Judiciary as guarantors of the rule of law” has recorded intended participation from judges and magistrates coming from countries across the Commonwealth, such as Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Canada and the Caribbean region.

Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Justice Carl Singh has indicated that one of the conference’s guest of honour will be the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, His Excellency Anthony Carmona, who is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech to the conference.

The Rule of Law, provision of resources for the Courts, anti-terrorism legislation and human rights, among other topics are slated to be presented.

According to a press release issued today, the conference aims to promote better understanding amongst judicial officers of all ranks and from all parts of the Commonwealth, of judicial independence issues and to explore the approach to those issues in different parts of the Commonwealth, among others.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo will also deliver a keynote address to the conference delegates and special invitees on the opening day of the conference which will end on Wednesday September 21, 2016.
