Guyana’s Ombudsman, Retired Justice Winston Moore was today (Friday, September 23, 2016) laid to rest.

Justice Winston Lennox McLennon Moore passed away on Friday, September 16, after losing his battle with cancer.

Speaking at the funeral ceremony today, Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo expressed sympathy on behalf of President David Granger, government ministers and the people of Guyana to Mrs. Vera Moore and the family of the late Justice Moore.

“Today we all share your loss.  You have lost the head of your family, this church has lost an elder, civil society has lost a leader and the government has lost an outstanding public servant.  Born in Alness on the Corentyne, Justice Moore was my “countryman”, and that was how we greeted each other, while he served as a judge, lawyer, and then ombudsman” the PM said

He described Mr. Moore as a great all- rounder.

Mr. Winston Moore has worked in the private and public sectors for fifty-five years as a clerk, soldier, lawyer, lecturer, judge and finally as ombudsman of Guyana.

He has also given sterling service as an elder of his church and as a leading member of the Lions Club of South Georgetown and Georgetown Stabroek.

Moore was sworn in as Ombudsman in 2014, by then Head of State Donald Ramotar, marking the first appointment of its kind in over a decade.

Appointed as High Court Judge in 1998, Moore held that post until 2007 when he functioned as a Judge Advocate for the Guyana Defense Force.

He also served as Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry to investigate the escape of inmates and other related occurrences at the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) Essequibo.
