Children in state care were this weekend treated to goodies as the Child Protection Agency of the Ministry of Social Protection ended its observation of Child Protection Week 2016.

The children who reside in various State-run homes were treated to face painting, trampoline and a mini concert, which included dancing, poetry, drama, songs and performances by Michael Khan “Ole Man Paapi” and Abigale James

The Ministry of Social Protection through the Child Care & Protection Agency (CCPA) observed Child Protection Week from September 18 – 24 under the theme Children’s Safety and Security Our Priority.

One of the major concerns highlighted during the week is the pervasive silence on childhood sexual abuse in society. The CCPA said incest and under age sexual activity are grave concerns to the Agency.

Individuals, local communities and groups, including religious bodies are encouraged to take action to ensure that children’s rights are not violated and that they can live in communities where they are free from harm and abuse.

This is in recognition that there is much more to be done by all in keeping children safe.

Recently, Director of the agency, Ann Greene said a report from January to July 2016 shows that in Guyana there were 2,238 reports of child abuse, “that includes all forms of abuse and sexual abuse” and 441 cases of sexual abuse.
