The business community in Guyana continues to be affected by crime and President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vishnu Doerga says the hosting of an Information Technology security forum and expo in October is one way in which businesspersons would be educated on ways to safeguard their businesses and themselves using the latest technology.

This is one way which the Chamber brings all the latest information, all the latest products, the latest technology on a single platform allows people to know what is available to them and of course we always promote the use of electronic money…. And we see the news a lot of the people being robbed are those who withdraw a lot of money we would really discourage them from that practice,” Doerga said.

Doerga continues to urge businesspersons to avoid putting themselves at unnecessary risk by conducting cash transactions.

The IT security forum and expo will be held on October 21 at the Roraima Duke Lodge and will feature presentations in the field by professionals in both the private and public sectors.

Meantime, the GCCI president expressed the view that public servants should be appreciative of the one to ten percent salary increases being offered by the Government given the fact that Gross Domestic Product has only grown by two percent.

He stated that, “From a private sector perspective, if we were to look at Guyana as private sector entity there would be no way there would be salary increases given that we are only two percent ahead of our GDP growth, how could we pay 10 percent if we are two percent ahead…I am happy that I am not the Minister of Finance because there would not have been any.”

Doerga reasoned that the two percent increase in GDP came from Gold, which is not in circulation presently. He said what is needed is the creation of an enabling environment especially as it relates to exports.

The salary increases are expected to take effect from October.
