Communities Ministry looking for building for Local Gov’t Commission-Harmon

The establishment of the Local Government Commission is being delayed due to the lack of an appropriate building to house the body.

This is according to Minister of State, Joseph Harmon who on Thursday stated that the Ministry of Communities is actively taking steps to find a suitable building to house the Commission.

According to Harmon, the ministry is ensuring that all the processes are completed. He was responding to questions from the media at this week’s Post Cabinet press briefing.

“There are some buildings that have already been identified by that process and we can expect that within a short space of time” the office space will be identified.

Just this week, the main opposition, Peoples Progressive Party/Civic, held a picketing exercise in front the Ministry of the Presidency and Ministry of Communities, questioning the government’s delay and calling on President David Granger to instruct the Minister to set up the commission.

The PPP/C had identified Former Acting Town Clerk of Georgetown, Carol Sooba and former PPP Local Government Ministers; Norman Whittaker and Clinton Collymore as their nominees for the Commission.

However, the government’s nominees still remain unnamed.

When asked about the government’s nominees on Thursday, Harmon said he is not at liberty to disclose those names.
