    Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Ivelaw Griffith during an interaction with the media fraternity today said there are many challenges, infrastructural and otherwise that the University’s administration is working assiduously to overcome.

     

    He informed that a recent meeting was held with the Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, where the gravity, scope and extent of the infrastructural changes that have to be made at the Turkeyen Campus were addressed.

    Surveys will be conducted by officials from the Public infrastructure Ministry to look at possible ways of rectifying the defects.

     

    UG is also presently in discussions with the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) where the necessary persons would look at improving the drainage and irrigation woes at the main Campus.

     

    The University, over the past weeks has been working closely with the E-Government Unit of the Ministry of the Presidency to link the fibre optic ring that was placed at the Turkeyen Campus, under the World Bank project with the E-Gov towers and UG’s Center for Information Technology.

     

    This is according to Vice Chancellor of Philanthropy, Alumni and Civic Affairs, Dr. Paloma Mohamed. While an exact cost for this project has not been determined, Dr. Mohamed side a wide ballpark figure of 6 million dollars was provided by the E-Gov Unit; however, the officials are still in the process of deciding what exactly needs to be done.

    This should be completed within the next month to six weeks.

     

    This project would be spearheaded by Director, Office of Strategic Initiatives Dr. Fitzgerald Yaw and is anticipated to answer the call for better internet services and the need for WI-FI on campus.
