Today is World Sight Day and in its observance, the Lions Club of Georgetown D’Urban Park has joined the global crusade to end blindness by hosting its annual free eye screening for primary school pupils within its governing areas.

Vision Screening was conducted at the Redeemer Lutheran Recreation Centre in Campbellville for some 300 students of five designated Primary schools, namely Tucville,  Enterprise, St. Thomas Moore, South Ruimveldt, Smith’s memorial and St. Pius primary schools.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the importance of Eye Health and the need for quality eye care services.

Lion, Marcia Edwards said the initiative involves the screening of the pupils and provision of corrective measures or advice on any further interventions to treat vision impairment.

Specialists from the Georgetown Public Hospital, Ming’s Optical and Value Eye Wear were at the Recreation Centre offering the free service.

The pupils were transported via a school bus compliments of the Lions Club.

Sight is a signature Activity of the Lions Club International, which through the Lions Clubs International Foundation has sponsored Lions World Sight Day since 1988 as a Global Vision Initiative.

According to the World Health Organization, 80 percent of all cases of blindness can be prevented or readily treated.

World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment.

This year, the ‘Call to Action’ for World Sight Day is “Stronger Together.”

Other eye clinics, such as Da Silva’s Optical, have also joined in the observance by offering free eye tests and spectacles to those in need.
