October is designated Breast Cancer Awareness month and as part of this observance Caribbean Medical Supplies Inc today donated five breast lights to the Guyana Cancer Foundation, which will be used in the self- breast examination drives.

The donation of five breast lights was made to Founder and President of the Guyana Cancer Foundation, Bibi Hassan by Owner of Caribbean Medical Supplies Inc., Davendra Rampersaud, who explained how the self- breast examination device works.

“It’s a handheld device that illuminates the breasts what is does is that it passes an ultra violet light throughout the breast and this begins to have the breast look like an x-ray, but you can use it in your homes, in your bathrooms … a device to be used in your home but it can be used for general screening. In this illumination you would be able to see any mass, any debris tissue building up in the breasts,” Rampersaud informed.

According to him this would allow early detection of potentially cancerous lumps or masses and once this is discovered further analysis and treatment can be done by a physician.

He noted too that, the breast lights comes with a CD explaining how to use the device, as well as a tube of lubricant, however when this is finished, there is a list of alternative lubricants that can be used for follow-up exams.

Meantime, Miss Hassan expressed gratitude for the timely and much-needed donation, which she said would be critical during outreaches to be conducted by the Guyana Cancer Foundation, “this would be a good venture to help women …and we will use it very effectively because our mission is to teach women how to do the self-breast examination in the comfort of their homes and we have the educational materials that we distribute to help women to detect cancer.”

Hassan is calling on other corporate entities to come on board and assist the Foundation in its cancer awareness efforts.

The Breast light is manufactured by a company in the United Kingdom known as PWB Health and the local distributor Caribbean Medical Supplies Inc, located at Hydronie, Parika is retailing each at $40, 000, but for the month of October, the price has been reduced to $25, 000.

The product is rechargeable with an adjustable brightness setting and utilizes touch sensory technology.

According to the World Health Organization, Breast Cancer Awareness Month helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.

It highlighted that Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries and currently there is insufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control.
