12-year-old hits 82, takes 5-4 in NSSCL

The National Secondary School Cricket League (NSSCL), organized by the Guyana Cricket Board, continued this week with 12-year-old Mavendra Dindyal hitting a superb 82 and taking a five-wicket haul to lead his school, Diamond Secondary, to a huge win over Covent Garden Secondary.

Playing at the Everest Cricket Club ground, Diamond Secondary racked up 197-3 in 30 overs on the back of Dindyal’s classy knock. The pint-sized opener stroked 11 sweetly-timed boundaries during his innings.

Akeem Hendricks supported well with 44, while Shoaib Roop took 2-22, bowling for Covent Garden Secondary.

Covent Garden could only make 72 all out in their reply with Dindyal returning with the ball to bamboozle the batsmen on his way to impressive figures of five wickets for just four runs.

At the GNIC ground, defending champions Chase Academy were too good for Bishop’s High School, dismissing them for 115 in 28.5 overs.

Troy Persaud followed up his unbeaten 74 in his first match with a top-score of 35 and Sachin Ramroop supported him with 22. Bowling for Chase Academy, Dwain Dick bagged 5-16, while Tyrese Trescot and Sachin Singh took 2-14 and 2-16 respectively.

In reply, Chase Academy raced to 116-1, winning by nine wickets. Sachin Singh again led the way with an unbeaten 79 to follow up the 101 he scored in his first match.

Queen’s College won the toss and chose to bowl against Richard Ishmael Secondary at Demerara Cricket Club ground. Richard Ishmael made 105-6 in 20 overs with Juspice Jones top scoring with 24, while Tariq Hendricks made 20. Bowling for Queen’s College, Amos Sarwan took 2-14.

In reply, Queen’s College fell short of their target by seven runs as they could only get to 98 for the loss of nine wickets when the overs expired. Bowling for Richard Ismael Secondary, Juspice Jones had 3-9 and Brandon Ramnarine 2-18.

Kingston High School outplayed School of Nations at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, dismissing them for a paltry 41 in 10.2 overs. Bowling for Kingston High School, Mark Sukhai bagged 5-5, while Meshack Soffleigh claimed 4-4. Kingston High School hit off the runs in 6.7 overs, finishing on 43-2 with Meshack Soffleigh making 16.

At the Muslim Youth Organisation ground, St Mary’s thumped Marian Academy by seven wickets. Batting first, Marian Academy’s batsmen were routed for 42 in 10.4 overs. Akeem Christmas was the pick of the bowlers with 4-15, while Alex Rogers took 2-1 and Kester McAllister had 2-8.

In reply, St Mary’s galloped to the target in 3.4 overs, finishing on 45-3 with Steffon Wilson making an unbeaten 18.
