The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha will be celebrating Diwali on Sunday October 30, 2016, the darkest night on the Hindu calendar and according to its President, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, the date was arrived at using traditional methods, with Scientific backing as presented by the NASA Space Centre.

Last year and this year, as well there is discrepancy with the date to observe the Hindu holiday popularly known as Diwali, with Government declaring the date as October 29, while the Sabha  maintains its stance that the date is October 30. Their celebrations will be  held on that date.

In terms of the ongoing differences with the dates, Dr. Persaud made it clear that she respects the schools of thought, however, it is her duty to put forward the position of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, reasoning that throughout the world it is being observed on October 30 making reference to the United Nations acknowledgement of the said date.

She is urging that instead of spending time being divisive, persons should continue the call for unity and educate persons so that they would understand how and why Diwali is celebrated.
