Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death here and a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is aiming to shed a light of hope for individuals fighting the disease.

A group which goes by the name ‘Health and Education Relief Organization for Cancer’ (HEROC) is on a mission to spread the good news about those who survived the sickness.

Today the organization hosted a  ‘Look Good, Feel Better’ event for 25 cancer patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital which featured stories of survival.

The Organization’s President, Lorna Welshman-Neblett said while they might not be doctors or nurses, the aim is to help people in their homeland who fought and are continuing their battle with cancer.

“I realize there was a stigma, lots of people do not talk about it, a lot of people do not receive support from family members so they’re battling it all by themselves so we thought that with our team…could being some hope” Welshman-Neblett said.

Cancer survivor, Debra Lowe shared her journey with the illness and losing her husband to cancer after saying I do, 37 years ago.

According to her, after being diagnosed with cancer in January last year her husband made a promise to take care of her. Mrs. Lowe said battling cancer has made her a strong woman and living for her grandson is what keeps her going today.

Health and Education Relief Organization for Cancer on Friday will host a candlelight vigil for those who died from Cancer and are currently battling the disease. There will also be a walk at the weekend.
