Cycling rivalry will be taken to another level on Sunday when the fifth annual Digicel Cancer Awareness race is held around the outer circuit of the National Park. From all indications, a large pool of riders will face the starting line in the lucrative feature race.

Usually, the Digicel sponsored event is well attended by both riders and spectators and this year is expected to be no different.

With seven categories of races to be held during the day, the organising club, Team Gillette Evolution, is expecting no less than 70 riders for one day activity, set to pedal off at 08:00h.

The action will get underway with the novice race, which will feature newcomers, sport enthusiasts and staff of Digicel, followed by the professional riders taking centre stage in the main races.

There will be rivalry in the Junior, Mountain Bike, Veteran Under-45 and Over-45, and Female categories, followed by the feature 30-lap race, open to all riders.

The main race is expected to be fast-paced, as some parts of the course around the National Park were recently refurbished. The winner of that event is guaranteed $250,000, while there will be several giveaways for cyclists and fans by Digicel.

Additionally, the telecommunications company will match the registration fee received from the riders and donate the sum to the fight against cancer in Guyana. Team Coco’s Raynauth Jeffrey won last year’s race and is a favourite to repeat.
