GNRSC launches Road safety month under theme ” Life does not have a reset button, drive carefully”

Road Safety month, which begins officially tomorrow November One, was today launched under the theme “Life does not have a reset button, drive carefully.”

Traffic Chief, Dion Moore said his department has embarked on a daily routine of enforcing the traffic laws, noting that the number of drivers charged this year for offences has increased when compared to the same period last year.

The Traffic Chief bemoaned the practice of drinking under the influence, given the fact that it is responsible for many of the fatal accidents in Guyana, noting that “it is a deadly practice.”

Moore charged the public to dissuade others from doing anything contrary to the law, pointing out that while everyone is entitled to equal liberties if that right infringes on another person’s safety, then it should be avoided.

Meantime, Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan, delivering the feature address expressed dissatisfaction with the level of irresponsibility being shown by some members of society.

The Minister said the offences committed are all avoidable, making reference to the numerous charges such as driving under the influence, driving without seat belt, among others. Recounting an incident of a police rank who was caught speeding; Minister Ramjattan questioned where the exemplars for others to follow are.

Also in attendance was Minister within the Public Infrastructure Ministry, Annette Ferguson, Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine and Representatives of the Mothers in Black, among other officials.

A simulation exercise of an accident scene was also conducted.
