As Digicel Guyana continues its social responsibility, it has completed the rehabilitation of the Kingston Practical Instruction Centre which began in July 2015.

The rehabilitation was done in collaboration with the Ministry of Education with the company spending over US$10, 000.

Digicel’s Head of Marketing Jacqueline James said the idea started after an in-house competition for staff members as a means to encourage them to do a project that can benefit their community their community.

“The project in itself was to restore the classrooms on the ground floor as well as do any minor fixing up that may be required on the upper floors. Based on the funds won, it was not enough to complete the project. As Digicel, we decided that we’ll put some more money towards it and we put a little more and a little more and we’re still putting a little more” James said.

She said the company remains committed to improving the lives of young people.

Acting Chief Education Officer, Marcel Hutson expressed gratitude to the company. He said the support from Digicel goes to show how important technical people are for the development of any nation.

The Ministry’s Technical advisor, Vincent Alexander also used the opportunity to remind students of the importance of the technical sector.

One of the new features of the building is the establishment of individual classrooms which caters for students looking to do practical sessions in wood working, mechanic, metal work, technical drawing, brick work and welding. The institution is used by at least five schools across the city to teach such practical subjects.
