Organisation receives $28M to improve HIV/AIDS fight in four Regions

Today, a local organisation was awarded a grant by the Public Health Ministry to carry out a 14-month project targeting key populations in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The monies were made available through the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism.

Local organisation, Alpha and Omega Community Health Associates Inc. on Thursday was awarded the $28M grant was as part of the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism, which provides grants to aid in the fight against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

President of the Organization Dr. Karen Gordon-Boyle said the various activities will be carried out in Regions two, three, five and ten after being given those areas to meet such populations.

Director for the Public Health Ministry’s Development Unit, Dr. Morris Edwards said the selection process to become the implementing partner for the Global Fund saw more applicants than what was required.

Minister of Education within that Ministry Nicolette Henry sits as the chair of the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism with oversight as to how the monies are managed.

She said the funds will be used by the recipient to provide support to persons infected and affected with the HIV/AIDS virus.

Alpha and Omega Community Health Associates Inc.was formed in 2014 to fill the gap that existed for NGOs that had experience with managing donor funding and project management in Guyana and the Caribbean.

Key populations are defined by UNAIDS as gay men and other men who have sex with men, transgender people, sex workers, and people who inject drugs, and prisoners.
