Prince Harry’s visit could boost Guyana’s Tourism product

Fifth in line to the British throne, Prince Harry will be visiting the Caribbean later this month and will be in Guyana from December 2 to 4.

While here, His Highness is scheduled to visit several places in the capital, the Iwokrama Centre, Surama village and the Majestic Kaieteur Falls.

In an informal discussion with members of the local media corps on Friday, British High Commissioner, Greg Quinn says the locations were chosen so that the Prince would have a chance to see life outside of the capital.

“With the lot people that we have brought out here over the last years, I think people have come to Georgetown and not going anywhere else. I think the last time I see any of your visitors went anywhere is when Prince Charles came in 2000 when he actually went to North Rupununi as well and I think Georgetown is not Guyana” the British High Commissioner said.

He further explains that while the local team was hopeful of showcasing more, there is only so much that can be done in the short time. However, he is hopeful that the visit would play its part in boosting Guyana’s tourism product.

“I think the picture of the Prince coming to Kato; that iconic picture is something I’m sure cannot do any harm whatsoever to tourism here and I think that is something which he’s very happy to promote in any way that he can” he said.

The High Commissioner was also asked about preparations for Prince Harry’s arrival and whether local support has been forthcoming, to which he responded that everyone has been very supportive.

The Prince is also expected to spend some time at the Joshua House Children’s centre.
