Jaguars in control as Scorpions stumble in run-chase

Jamaica Scorpions lost two wickets in nine overs before the close as defending champions Guyana Jaguars remained on course for victory in the opening round of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Professional Cricket League Digicel Four-day tournament at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Chasing 329 for an outright win, Jamaica Scorpions lost opener John Campbell for one and Devon Thomas for three, with Keon Joseph and Veerasammy Permaul being the wicket-takers.

Opener Trevon Griffith (four) and Jason Dawes (zero) are the not out batsmen as the Scorpions closed on 9-2, still needing 320 on the final day to win.

Earlier, Guyana Jaguars, resuming on 26-0, declared on 238-4 with fifties from skipper Leon Johnson and fellow left-hander Vishaul Singh.

Singh topscored with 71 (149 balls, 7x4s), while Johnson made 69 (172 balls, 6x4s). They featured in a third wicket stand of 133 after openers Shimron Hetmyer and Rajendra Chandrika added 73 for the first wicket.

Hetmyer made 47 (72 balls, 7x4s) and Chandrika 34 (81 balls, 4x4s). Raymon Reifer (three) and Anthony Bramble (six) were the not out batsmen when the declaration came.

Final scores in the match: Guyana Jaguars 298 and 238-4 declared; Jamaica Scorpions 208 and 9-2. Play on the final day on Monday will commence at 09:30h and admission to the venue is free.
