Given the critical importance of persons knowing their HIV status, the Ministry of Public Health has taken the step to re-launch its National Week of Testing in an effort to allow more persons to get tested for the virus.

During a simple ceremony earlier today at the National Aids Programme Secretariat, Coordinator of the Volunteer Counseling and Testing Programme, Debra Success informed the local media that the virus is prevalent among young people ranging from age 15 to 25, a worrying trend.

In this regard, she noted that it is imperative and timely that the National week of testing be reintroduced.

Under the theme “Test and Start a New life for HIV Prevention” the week of testing would conclude on Sunday and persons can get tested at any of the 62 VCT sites across Guyana.

Public Health Minister, Dr. George Norton made a special appeal for persons to come out and get tested.

Minister within the Public Health Ministry, Dr. Karen Cummings called on the population to practice safe sexual behaviour to enjoy healthy long lives. She urged those already infected with HIV to continue with their treatment so they too can enjoy longevity.

Minister Norton along with other officials of the Public Health Ministry and the Ministry of Education set the pace by getting tested by the trained counselors.
