    The annual internal elections for the nine municipalities and 62 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) are due to be held by December 16, this year.

    According to the Ministry of Communities, some councils have already begun holding elections with Best/Klien NDC taking the lead and holding elections on Friday, November 18.

    The Good Hope/Hydronie NDC held its elections on Monday, November 21, while La Grange/Nismes is slated for November 23.

    The NDC at Vergenoegen/Greenwich Park, on the East Bank Essequibo has announced that their elections would be held on Thursday, November 24, 2016.

    There are still some councils that have not yet finalised a date for elections.

    The internal elections are for the purposes of electing the mayor, deputy mayor of the various municipalities as well as the chairman and the vice chairman of the NDCs,  the Ministry said.

    The yearly elections are in keeping with Section 28 (2) of the Local Government Act Chapter 28:02 and Chapter 28:01 of the Municipal and District Council Act.

    The Ministry of Communities also reminded all councils that their budgets and work programs for the year 2017 are to be completed and submitted to the Ministry of Communities by November 15 for purposes of notification.The work programs are also to be prominently displayed by the councils for public perusal.
